Base Metals - Navigating Turbulent Times
The base metals business, long a pillar of strength in Canada’s mining industry, is struggling today in a market where oversupply and weak demand are driving price declines that some experts believe will continue into 2017. Mining companies are under immense pressure to minimize cash outflows with exploration budgets and mine development among the areas hit. In these conditions, how do companies balance the need for immediate action with the longer-term requirements of the business – including managing and retaining talent in turbulent times. Jennifer Maki, CEO of Vale Canada and Executive Director of Vale Base Metals, will share her experiences leading Vale Canada during an industry downturn and what Vale is doing to address today’s pressures without sacrificing tomorrow’s promise.
Jennifer Maki - Chief Executive Officer, Vale Canada and Executive Director, Base Metals
Jennifer Maki was named Chief Executive Officer of Vale Canada and Executive Director of Vale Base Metals in November 2014. Ms. Maki has distinguished herself as an astute leader at Vale by taking firm action in cost management and control, implementing funding strategies, negotiating joint venture agreements in Base Metals, resolving pension fund issues for our Base Metals companies, and demonstrating exceptional commitment and motivational skills.
Previous positions held by Ms. Maki include Chief Financial Officer/Executive Vice-President and Vice-President/Treasurer. She has participated actively in managing our Base Metals businesses outside Canada as a member of the Board of Commissioners of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (PTVI) since 2007 and currently serves as its President Commissioner.
Before joining Vale in 2003, Ms. Maki worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers for a decade. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada and became a Chartered Accountant in 1996. Since 2012, Ms. Maki has served on the Board of Ronald McDonald House® Toronto, which provides a home away from home for seriously ill children and their families.
